CSI Focus Areas
Our vision for South Africa goes well beyond the cheque book. With the emphasis on sustainability, our most urgent priority is to ensure that our Community Affairs policy delivers long-term, tangible benefits to people at grassroots level. Ultimately, we measure the returns on our community investment according to the sense of hope, pride and ownership it fosters among communities. To maximise returns on our community investment, we structure and target our Community Affairs policy around four core areas:
Education
South Africa needs educated, skilled and literate citizens to help it grow and develop a thriving economy. Without access to decent schools, dedicated teachers, books and other resources, children face an uphill battle to educate themselves and improve their lives. To help address these needs, PetroSA’s Community Affairs programme supports new and existing primary and secondary schools serving disadvantaged communities by providing:
- Basic school infrastructure, including buildings, ablution facilities and classrooms
- Science, life skills and computer laboratories and assistance with maintaining these facilities
- Mathematics and science learner support programmes, as well as teacher training and development programmes
- Training to develop the capacity of school management bodies at funded schools.
Health
PetroSA’s Community Affairs programme aims to address the country’s primary healthcare challenges by providing:
- Assistance to organisations and projects administering treatment for terminal diseases, including hospitals, clinics, hospices and home-based career programmes
- Healthcare infrastructure in disadvantaged communities where there is an absence or lack of healthcare facilities.
-
Community Development
PetroSA aims to support the development of communities where we operate by investing in non-profit organisations and projects nominated by our staff. The focus is on improving living conditions and the quality of life among the communities our people live in. In addition, PetroSA provides funding under its Community Development focus area for:
- Disaster relief responses and initiatives
- Early Childhood Development (ECD) projects and programmes
- Industry-wide CSI initiatives, such as the Integrated Energy Centres
- Projects and programmes that support the disabled.
To maximise impact and ensure strategic alignment, our CSI initiatives are structured around four core focus areas:
Education
Community Development Projects
Health
Environment & Sustainable Development
Education
Education is a cornerstone of sustainable socio-economic development. SANPC prioritises strengthening foundational and secondary education systems by improving access to quality learning resources, enhancing infrastructure, and building institutional capacity. Through targeted interventions in STEMI, IT, and skills development, we aim to equip learners and educators with the competencies required for future economic participation.
Under this focus area, SANPC will:
Support Primary and Secondary School STEMI (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Innovation) programmes
Provide IT learner support programmes at primary and secondary school level
Fund and supply laboratory materials, equipment, and educational resources for science, life skills, skills development, and IT programmes
Invest in basic school infrastructure improvements, including:
- Renovation of school buildings
- Construction or upgrading of classrooms
- Improvement of ablution facilities
Provide educational equipment, including desks, computers, and other learning tools
Facilitate skills development and subject-specific training for educators, particularly in STEMI and IT disciplines
Community Development Projects
Sustainable community development requires targeted interventions that address socio-economic vulnerabilities, strengthen local capacity, and improve quality of life. SANPC’s community development initiatives are designed to support inclusive growth, social resilience, and equitable access to essential services, particularly within communities affected by poverty, inequality, and limited infrastructure.
Support and fund Early Childhood Development (ECD) programmes and projects that enhance school readiness and foundational learning
Implement and contribute to industry-aligned CSI initiatives, including participation in Integrated Energy Centres and similar collaborative platforms
Facilitate training and capacity-building for caregivers, support groups, and community-based organisations addressing prevalent social challenges
Support programmes and projects that empower and improve the quality of life of persons living with disabilities
Contribute to the alleviation of energy poverty through:
- Refurbishment and energy-efficiency initiatives
- Energy-saving projects
- Community communication campaigns and advisory support
Implement projects aligned with SANPC’s Production Rights obligations, as outlined in approved Social and Labour Plans (SLPs)
Environment and Sustainable Development
Environmental stewardship is integral to long-term community resilience and sustainable economic growth. SANPC promotes environmental responsibility through education, conservation initiatives, and projects that generate both ecological and socio-economic value.
Under this focus area, SANPC will:
Support environmental and sustainability education programmes in disadvantaged schools and communities
Fund and participate in environmental clean-up campaigns and conservation initiatives
Implement greening programmes, including the provision of trees to schools and public parks
Support projects that integrate environmental sustainability with job creation opportunities
Give preference to initiatives that incorporate community education on environmental sustainability and responsible resource management
